ASSA ABLOY Steel Door Meets Passive House Certification Requirements

Amidst rapid urbanization and climate change challenges, the building industry is adapting its practices. ASSA ABLOY has responded by enhancing its Trio-E series steel doors for the North American market to meet passive house certification requirements, as verified by the Passive House Institute of the US (PHIUS).

The Trio-E series, offered by ASSA ABLOY's Americas Door Group brands Ceco, Curries, and Fleming, has been upgraded to meet PHIUS standards. The company states this is the only steel-stiffened door to achieve this certification. Designed for resilience, the doors are engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricane-force winds and debris.

The passive house standard, established by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany in 1996, focuses on creating highly energy-efficient buildings by maximizing the use of passive heat sources like sunlight and effective insulation, reducing reliance on active heating and cooling systems. These buildings offer superior thermal comfort and air quality. With buildings accounting for 40 percent of energy consumption in the United States, the demand for passive house-certified structures is growing.

"We are starting to get more requests for passive house projects," said Amy Musanti, Director, Sustainable Building Solutions at ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions. "Many cities have introduced regulations that require new multi-family buildings to follow passive house guidelines, and there aren’t any other US door manufacturers with a solution that has been certified by PHIUS."
