ASSA ABLOY has supplied ethically sourced mortise locks for the renovation of the Bigfork Library in Montana, USA, as part of a Grace Farms Design for Freedom pilot project. The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of responsible sourcing in construction.

The community library's renovation focused on ethical building design, with a shared commitment to eradicating forced labor from the building materials supply chain. This was achieved through detailed research and collaboration between designers and manufacturers.

The selected mortise lock, comprising over 150 components, served as a test case for ASSA ABLOY. The company has since enhanced its supply chain risk assessment and compliance technologies, leading to improved traceability.

Amy Musanti, Director of Sustainable Building Solutions at ASSA ABLOY, stated that product and process optimization are key to their involvement in Design for Freedom. "We plan to continue driving this as part of our broader sustainability initiative," Musanti said.

Grace Farms leads the Design for Freedom Working Group, which ASSA ABLOY participates in. The group was established to combat forced labor in the building materials sector, and ASSA ABLOY is committed to ensuring ethical practices among its global network of over 9,000 suppliers.
