AstaReal AB Reports on Astaxanthin's Role in Eye Health Research

Swedish company AstaReal AB has provided an update on research concerning astaxanthin, a naturally occurring antioxidant, and its potential applications in supporting eye health. The findings highlight the compound's ability to address various eye conditions and digital eye strain.

Astaxanthin, known for its distinctive reddish-orange hue found in foods like salmon and shrimp, is a carotenoid that possesses the unique ability to cross the blood-retinal barrier. This characteristic allows it to deliver its protective effects directly to the eye's tissues. Research cited by the company indicates that astaxanthin effectively neutralizes free radicals both inside and outside cells, offering defense against oxidative stress linked to age-related eye diseases.

Studies have shown promising results in managing dry eye disease (DED), where astaxanthin supplementation has been associated with improvements in subjective symptoms and objective measures of the condition. Additionally, astaxanthin has demonstrated an ability to enhance blood flow velocity in the eye's capillaries, a factor that may play a role in preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

The company also notes potential benefits for eye fatigue resulting from modern lifestyles, such as prolonged screen time. Research suggests astaxanthin may improve visual acuity and reduce eye strain. Typically, studies have explored daily doses ranging from 2 to 12 mg, with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) setting a maximum daily intake of 14 mg from all sources.
