Astera Labs Releases Orion Reference Architecture for Server Chassis
Semiconductor firm Astera Labs has unveiled Orion, a reference design for computation-agnostic server chassis. The modular, open-standard platform allows users to configure processing and memory resources based on demand and availability.
Semiconductor interconnect company Astera Labs announced on October 12 its Orion reference design for computation-agnostic server chassis. The platform is built on open standards and features a modular structure, enabling users to combine processing power and memory configurations according to their needs and component availability.
The Orion package includes six production-grade reference architectures: the chassis, compute trays, switch trays, memory trays, interconnect boards, and compute boards. This modular approach supports a diverse range of CPUs and AI accelerators, allowing for flexible hardware configurations.
At the core of the system is Astera Labs' 320-lane PCIe Switch, which provides predictable low-latency communication within and between chassis, along with scalable memory capacity. Each pod within the Orion design can support up to 160 accelerators, delivering high performance for demanding tasks.
System design and deliveries of the Orion reference architecture are proceeding as planned, with availability expected in Q1 2027 through Astera Labs' OEM and ODM partners.
