AstraZeneca Completes Acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca announced the completion of its acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals. The deal enhances AstraZeneca's capabilities in developing targeted cancer treatments.
AstraZeneca announced on June 4, 2024, the successful completion of its acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals Inc. Fusion Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing next-generation radioconjugates (RCs) for cancer treatment.
The acquisition is a significant move for AstraZeneca in its strategy to transform cancer treatment outcomes. It aims to replace traditional therapies like chemotherapy and radiotherapy with more targeted approaches. Fusion's pipeline of RCs, including its lead programme FPI-2265 for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), will be integrated into AstraZeneca's oncology portfolio.
Fusion now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca, with activities in both Canada and the United States. The total transaction value is approximately $2.4 billion, comprising an upfront cash payment and a non-transferable contingent value right payable upon achievement of a specified regulatory milestone before August 31, 2029.
The deal strengthens AstraZeneca's presence and commitment to Canada. Fusion's headquarters are located in Hamilton, Ontario. The acquisition brings new expertise and capabilities in R&D, manufacturing, and supply chain for actinium-based RCs to AstraZeneca.
