AstraZeneca announced the discontinuation of its eVOLVE-Lung02 Phase III trial, which investigated volrustomig in combination with chemotherapy as a first-line treatment for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC). The decision follows a recommendation from the Independent Data Monitoring Committee (IDMC) after a planned review of trial data.

The IDMC concluded that the volrustomig combination was unlikely to meet either of the dual primary endpoints: progression-free survival (PFS) or overall survival (OS). This assessment was based on the primary analysis population of patients whose tumors expressed less than 1% PD-L1. The trial enrolled 895 patients across 25 countries.

The safety profile of volrustomig plus chemotherapy was consistent with the known profiles of the individual medicines, and no new safety signals were identified. AstraZeneca stated it will work with investigators to ensure continuity of care and appropriate follow-up for patients enrolled in the trial.

Other ongoing Phase III trials for volrustomig in cervical cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and mesothelioma will continue as planned. The company did not elaborate on how this decision impacts its broader oncology pipeline strategy.
