AstraZeneca Extends $100M+ Commitment to Youth Health Equity
AstraZeneca is extending its commitment to youth health equity with a new five-year phase of its Young Health Programme. The initiative aims to reach 10 million more young people and train 800,000 youth advocates globally by 2030.
Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has announced an extended commitment to improving youth health equity through a new five-year phase of its Young Health Programme (YHP). The company stated that its total investment in the initiative has now surpassed $100 million since its inception in 2010. The expanded program will be undertaken in partnership with UNICEF and over 60 non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The YHP focuses on preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease among young people. The next phase, running until 2030, aims to directly reach an additional 10 million young individuals, train 800,000 youth advocates, and influence 17 global public policies. A key focus will be on youth-led action, health equity, and addressing the health impacts of climate change.
Over its 15-year history, the YHP has directly engaged 23 million young people in more than 60 countries and supported the training of over one million individuals. Research indicates the program yields a significant social return on investment.
Company executives emphasized that health should be viewed as a societal investment, while UNICEF highlighted the importance of empowering young people to drive healthier habits and strengthen health systems. Experts noted that adolescence is a critical period for establishing lifelong health trajectories, underscoring the long-term value of early health interventions.
