AstraZeneca Oncology Lead Mika Sovak Shares Patient and Physician Perspective
AstraZeneca's Mika Sovak, VP, Global Franchise Head, Lung Cancer, discusses her personal experience with breast cancer and its impact on her drive to advance cancer care.

Mika Sovak, VP, Global Franchise Head for Lung Cancer at AstraZeneca, has drawn on her personal journey with breast cancer to enhance her commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing oncology treatments.
Sovak's own diagnosis in 2021 offered a unique perspective, shifting her role from treating physician to patient. This personal experience highlighted the complexities of cancer treatment, including unexpected changes to her initial plan due to multifocal breast cancer, requiring a mastectomy and subsequent reconstructive surgery. Complications led to further surgeries and evolving treatment plans, emphasizing the need for flexibility and patient involvement in care decisions.
The experience underscored for Sovak the critical importance of clear communication and patient advocacy, especially for those without a strong medical background. She noted how understanding the medical rationale behind treatment adjustments made it easier for her to adapt, a realization that fuels her urgency to improve the delivery of care for all patients, regardless of their background.
"Having been on both sides of a cancer diagnosis, in my work as an oncologist and experience as a patient, has strengthened my passion and resolve to push the boundaries of science and delivery of cancer care to benefit patients in need," Sovak stated.
Now leading AstraZeneca's Lung Franchise, Sovak aims to transform the outlook for lung cancer patients, a disease historically considered a grim prognosis. The company is focused on developing innovative therapies and exploring drug combinations to combat the disease at every stage.
