AstraZeneca pauses clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccine
AstraZeneca has voluntarily halted global trials of its AZD1222 vaccine candidate following an unexplained illness in a UK study participant.
AstraZeneca has paused global clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, AZD1222, to allow for an independent safety review. The move follows a single instance of an unexplained illness in a participant enrolled in the UK Phase III trial.
Standard clinical trial protocols mandate a hold on testing when a potential safety concern arises, allowing external experts to investigate the data. AstraZeneca describes this as a routine measure to maintain the integrity of the study while assessing the participant's condition.
CEO Pascal Soriot stated that the pause reflects the company’s commitment to safety and scientific rigor. The trials will remain on hold until the independent committee concludes its review and provides guidance on whether testing can resume.
