AstraZeneca plans $2 billion manufacturing investment in Maryland
AstraZeneca announced plans to invest $2 billion in its Maryland manufacturing facilities, creating 2,600 jobs. The investment will expand production capacity for cancer, rare disease, and chronic disease medicines.

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has announced a $2 billion investment to expand its manufacturing presence in Maryland. The plan includes a significant expansion of its biologics manufacturing facility in Frederick and the construction of a new state-of-the-art facility in Gaithersburg for the development and clinical supply of molecules for clinical trials.
The investment is expected to support 2,600 jobs across the two sites, including the creation of 300 highly skilled positions. The Frederick expansion will nearly double commercial manufacturing capacity for biologics, enabling increased supply of existing medicines and, for the first time, production of the company's rare disease portfolio. Construction roles are also projected to number 900.
In Gaithersburg, the new clinical manufacturing facility will support an additional 100 jobs and retain 400 roles, alongside 1,000 construction-related jobs. Both the expanded Frederick facility and the new Gaithersburg site are slated for completion in 2029 and will incorporate advanced technologies like AI and automation, built to high environmental standards.
This investment is part of AstraZeneca's broader, announced $50 billion commitment to research, development, and manufacturing in the United States. The Maryland expansion follows recent announcements of new manufacturing facilities for cell therapies and drug substances elsewhere in the U.S. this year.
