AstraZeneca announced Tuesday it intends to invest $50 billion in the United States by 2030, focusing on expanding drug manufacturing and research and development (R&D) capabilities. This strategic move aims to bolster the company's presence in its largest market and support its ambition to generate 50% of its total revenue in the U.S. by 2030, reaching a target of $80 billion in overall revenue.

The cornerstone of the planned investment is a proposed multi-billion dollar drug substance manufacturing facility in Virginia. This state-of-the-art center will focus on producing therapies for chronic diseases, including weight management and metabolic disorders. The facility represents AstraZeneca's largest single capital investment in a manufacturing site to date.

Further investments will include expanding R&D facilities in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and establishing a new R&D center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company also plans to develop next-generation manufacturing for cell therapies in Rockville, Maryland, and Tarzana, California, alongside expansions in continuous manufacturing in Mount Vernon, Indiana, and specialty manufacturing in Coppell, Texas.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick highlighted the investment as a critical step in strengthening domestic pharmaceutical production and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin welcomed the announcement, noting the creation of highly skilled jobs and the advancement of pharmaceutical manufacturing technology within the Commonwealth.

The United States currently represents 42% of AstraZeneca's total revenue, with the company already employing over 18,000 people across 19 R&D, manufacturing, and commercial sites nationwide.
