A research team led by Professor Qian Shengbang of Yunnan University has published findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) detailing three exoplanets that remain in orbit despite their host stars having entered the helium-burning stage of their life cycles. Current theoretical frameworks suggest that as stars expand into red giants, they should either engulf or destroy nearby planets.

Using satellite observation data and stellar evolution modeling, the researchers analyzed the luminosity of stars 24 Boo, HD 12648, and TYC 4282-605-1. The findings indicate that the three identified planets orbit within the radius that should have been overtaken by the expanding stars, yet they persist. This anomaly suggests that current understanding of star-planet interactions in aging systems is incomplete.

Qian stated that finding multiple instances of such planets indicates the existence of an underlying physical mechanism rather than a series of statistical coincidences. The research, involving collaboration with the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, suggests that the long-term evolutionary paths of planetary systems, including our own, may be more complex than standard models predict.
