AT&T and Ericsson Demonstrate Drone Detection Using 5G Network

AT&T and Ericsson have demonstrated the detection of drones utilizing advanced network sensing over a 5G network, illustrating how capabilities expected in 6G systems can be developed today. The demonstration was conducted in authorized airspace outside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, during a major global sporting event.

Employing Ericsson technology and AT&T's 5G network expertise, the system successfully detected, located, and tracked multiple drones in real time. This showcases how existing wireless infrastructure can be leveraged to protect large venues, critical infrastructure, and other key locations from unauthorized aerial activity.

During the demonstration, Ericsson deployed its Massive MIMO radios across multiple sites, creating a multi-static sensing configuration using existing cellular towers. The technology combined sensing-enabled radio transmissions with advanced signal processing and AI algorithms to enable real-time environmental sensing using signals typically used for communication, offering a cost-effective solution for widespread coverage.

Drones flying at altitudes between 300 and 400 feet were successfully detected and tracked. The system provided enhanced detection reliability and positioning accuracy by combining observations from multiple synchronized sensing nodes. AT&T and Ericsson plan to continue exploring integrated sensing and communication technologies, anticipating future applications for large events and public safety.
