AT&T to phase out new landline orders in California

AT&T is set to discontinue accepting new traditional landline orders in California on July 19, 2026, a move that comes 150 years after Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. The decision has prompted a coalition to urge the public to secure landline service before the deadline.

The Coalition to Save Landlines highlights the critical role of landlines during emergencies, particularly power outages, where cellular and fiber networks can fail. Recent widespread cellular outages experienced by AT&T demonstrated the reliability of landlines, as thousands of 911 calls were unable to connect during the disruption.

During California's frequent and extended power outages, landlines often serve as the sole reliable means of communication. Cable, fiber, and wireless services depend on electricity and backup batteries, which can prove inadequate during multi-day blackouts. AT&T's planned AP-A system offers only 24 hours of standby power.

While AT&T has received FCC approval to discontinue service after June 1, 2027, this conflicts with previous denials from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The matter is under review by the FCC, and its authority to preempt state regulations is being challenged in court. Consumers encountering difficulties are advised to remain persistent, document interactions, and follow guidance from SaveLandlines.org.
