Attorney Mark Lanier pursues litigation strategy against major tech firms
Attorney Mark Lanier argues that legal action and public pressure are necessary to compel accountability from major social media companies.

Attorney Mark Lanier has become a prominent figure in the ongoing legal scrutiny of social media platforms. Serving as lead counsel in the first trial involving social media addiction claims, Lanier secured a verdict against Meta and Google in March. While the $6 million damage award was modest relative to the scale of these tech companies, the case established a legal pathway for future challenges.
More recently, Lanier's firm served as outside counsel for states suing Meta over the failure to protect minors on platforms like Instagram. The resulting settlement, which could reach $16.7 billion, mandates platform modifications, such as default time limits for teenage users. Similar settlements have since been reached with other industry players, including TikTok.
Lanier contends that while high-dollar settlements grab headlines, they are often treated by tech giants as the standard cost of doing business. He suggests that meaningful reform requires a combination of aggressive litigation and sustained public awareness to influence corporate policy from both within and outside the courtroom.
