Audemars Piguet Risk Taker Strategy with Swatch Pays Off

Luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet ventured into a lower price segment by partnering with Swatch for a new collection. The eight-piece Bioceramic Royal Pop Collection, launched in May 2026, featured watches attached to lanyards retailing at approximately $400, a stark contrast to Audemars Piguet's flagship Royal Oak models, which range from $30,000 to over $250,000.

The launch generated unprecedented consumer interest, causing Swatch to temporarily close dozens of stores worldwide due to overwhelming crowds. Locations including London, Paris, and New York experienced significant public gatherings. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek Jr. described the situation as "hellishly crowded" but acknowledged that such initial demand is a positive indicator.

This collaboration has proven to be a financial success for Audemars Piguet. CEO Ilaria Resta stated that the privately held Swiss company has achieved monthly sales records since the Royal Pop debut. This performance is notable as many Swiss watch brands have faced challenges with declining U.S. sales and increased tariffs.

The strategy appears to have expanded Audemars Piguet's market reach, attracting a broader customer base beyond its traditional luxury clientele. The brand's willingness to experiment with a mass-market partner has resulted in significant sales growth.
