Audi details production of NSU Lambretta scooter

Audi Tradition is publishing the fifth episode in its series focusing on the model history of the traditional NSU brand. This installment details the production of the Lambretta scooter in Neckarsulm between 1950 and 1956.

NSU did not originally develop the Lambretta but manufactured it under license from the Italian manufacturer Innocenti. Production in Neckarsulm commenced in 1950 when the plant needed new models to utilize its capacity after ceasing vehicle repairs for the U.S. Army. The scooter trend was significant in Germany at the time.

Two versions of the NSU Lambretta were introduced: a 123cc model with a top speed of 70 km/h, followed by a 150cc version reaching 81 km/h. These scooters, powered by single-cylinder two-stroke engines, were offered in four colors: lime green, beige, medium gray, and light gray. Approximately 117,000 units of these models were produced.

Upon the expiration of the license agreement with Innocenti in 1956, NSU continued scooter production as an in-house development under the NSU Prima name. This model was manufactured in Neckarsulm until 1964, marking the end of scooter production there. A total of 160,000 NSU Prima scooters were built.

The story of the NSU Lambretta is part of a larger series celebrating the 150th anniversary of the NSU brand, showcasing its classic and unique models.
