These active safety functions are designed to help drivers avoid accidents. They operate by early hazard detection, issuing warnings, and, if the driver does not react, initiating emergency braking or executing evasive steering maneuvers. Audi states the objective is to improve road safety for all users, including occupants of their vehicles and vulnerable road users like cyclists and motorcyclists.
A key development involves swerve assist and automatic emergency steering. This system analyzes traffic situations in real-time and optimizes steering input to help the driver avoid obstacles, such as sudden road obstructions. Audi emphasizes that while the system can steer the vehicle autonomously, the driver always retains control and can override the assist functions at any time.
Another area of focus is proactive occupant protection. This system activates upon detecting an imminent rear-end collision. It tightens seatbelts, raises side windows, and activates hazard lights to prepare the cabin for a potential impact. Audi has been implementing such preventive systems for over a decade, continuously refining them.
