Audi implements micro-LED technology in Q3 lighting system

Audi is integrating its latest digital Matrix LED technology into the new Audi Q3. The system utilizes a light module approximately 13 millimeters wide, housing a chip with 25,600 micro-LEDs. Each diode can be controlled individually, allowing the headlight to function with a precision comparable to a video projector.

The primary application of this hardware is the dynamic adjustment of light distribution. The system monitors oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead, automatically masking portions of the light beam that would cause glare. This functionality eliminates the need for manual high-beam operation while maintaining optimal illumination for the driver.

In addition to adaptive masking, the system projects visual guidance directly onto the road surface. These orientation lights provide lane-centering assistance by displaying dynamic lines to the driver, a feature that adjusts based on driving conditions such as highway use.

Beyond functional improvements, the micro-LED architecture offers physical benefits, including reduced weight and a smaller installation footprint. The implementation in the Q3 marks the first time this high-density lighting technology has been used in Audi's compact segment.
