Audi Integrates Circular Economy Principles into Early Product Development
Automaker Audi is incorporating circular economy principles into the early stages of product development. The aim is to enhance material recyclability and reduce waste.

Automaker Audi is increasingly integrating circular economy principles into the initial phases of product development.
Through a process referred to as the "rethink" principle, Audi aims to design vehicles so that materials at the end of their lifecycle can be efficiently returned to the material cycle. This contrasts with the traditional linear model where materials are used once and then disposed of.
The goal of the circular economy is to keep components and materials in use for as long as possible. A particular challenge involves utilizing high-quality materials derived from products already used by consumers (post-consumer) without compromising quality. Audi aims to avoid "downcycling," where material quality degrades during recycling.
The company emphasizes that the "Design for Circularity" approach considers aspects like dismantling, repairability, maintainability, and recyclability right from the design stage. The objective is to integrate recycled materials into vehicles in a manner that meets technical requirements and quality expectations. Collaboration among various departments, including design, technical development, and procurement, is crucial for achieving this goal.
