Audi marks 40 years of quattro technology

Audi is celebrating four decades of its quattro all-wheel-drive system. The technology has evolved from its original center differential to electric torque vectoring.

The German automaker Audi is marking the 40th anniversary of its pioneering quattro all-wheel-drive technology, first introduced in 1980. This system has become a cornerstone of Audi's brand identity and technological prowess. Initially featuring a manually lockable center differential, quattro has undergone significant advancements over the years.

Today, the principles of quattro are realized in Audi's all-electric e-tron S models, which employ three electric motors. These motors enable electric torque vectoring, distributing power to individual wheels for enhanced performance and agility. This evolution signifies a new phase in all-wheel-drive technology, building on quattro's legacy of success in both motorsport and customer applications.

Over its 40-year history, quattro has seen numerous innovations, including the "quattro with ultra technology." This system intelligently predicts the need for all-wheel drive, optimizing fuel efficiency by switching between front-wheel and all-wheel drive as needed. It utilizes sensor data and advanced control units to ensure optimal performance and handling across various driving conditions.

Audi has also demonstrated the capabilities of quattro technology on the racetrack. The Audi R18 e-tron quattro, for instance, achieved victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours race three times between 2012 and 2014, utilizing a hybrid powertrain with an electric front axle drive.
