Audi Reports Progress on Formula 1 Power Unit Development

Neuburg a. d. Donau/Hinwil – Audi Formula Racing GmbH (AFR) has made significant strides in the development of its Formula 1 power unit, the company announced Monday.

The manufacturer's F1 project, initiated in spring 2022, has reached crucial milestones. According to AFR CEO Adam Baker and CTO Stefan Dreyer, the F1 power unit, comprising a combustion engine, electric motor, battery, and control electronics, is now running dynamically on the test bench. The unit has already simulated race distances on various F1 circuits, including Las Vegas, Singapore, and Spielberg, providing the team with valuable data for optimizing energy management and performance development.

The development center in Neuburg has seen substantial expansion, now housing 22 state-of-the-art test benches. This infrastructure has enabled Audi to accelerate its learning curve and integrate experiences from individual component testing into subsequent construction stages. The company plans to commence testing of the entire drivetrain, including the transmission, in the near future.

Audi Formula Racing GmbH is set to become a factory Formula 1 team in 2026. In addition to the Neuburg facility, the Hinwil site is also involved in the development work. Audi's prior experience with high-voltage technology in motorsport, including its involvement in Le Mans and Formula E, significantly supports the current F1 initiative.
