Audi RS 5 becomes plug-in hybrid
The new Audi RS 5 marks Audi Sport's first plug-in hybrid model. It combines a V6 twin-turbo engine with an electric motor, delivering 470 kW of system output and over 80 km of electric range.
Ingolstadt – Audi Sport is introducing the new Audi RS 5, its first high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The model pairs a 2.9-liter V6 twin-turbo engine producing 375 kW (510 PS) with a 130 kW electric motor. The combined system output reaches 470 kW (639 PS), with an optional top speed of 285 km/h. The electric-only range is stated to exceed 80 km for city driving.
This new RS 5 features Audi's revised quattro all-wheel-drive system, incorporating dynamic torque control on the rear transaxle. This system, described as the world's first electromechanical torque vectoring in a production car, aims to provide agile and precise handling. The central differential manages longitudinal torque distribution, while the new rear differential can shift torque between wheels rapidly.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner stated that the new RS 5 represents a new era for Audi's performance models. "The sophisticated technical interplay between the combustion engine and electric power brings performance and efficiency together in a new way," Döllner commented. Rolf Michl, Managing Director of Audi Sport, added that the model introduces a new level of dynamics and enhances everyday usability through its electric driving capability.
Visually, the RS 5 is approximately nine centimeters wider than the base A5, featuring flared fenders for a muscular stance. The front is dominated by a three-dimensional Singleframe grille and darkened Matrix LED headlights with a digital daytime running light signature. At the rear, an aerodynamic diffuser and the matte oval tailpipes of the RS sport exhaust system complete the sporty design.
