Audi selects Sauber as strategic partner for Formula 1 entry

German automaker Audi has chosen Sauber as its strategic partner for its planned entry into Formula 1 in 2026. As part of the agreement, Audi will also acquire a stake in the Sauber Group.

Sauber, a long-standing team in Formula 1, will compete as Audi's factory team from the 2026 season onwards, utilizing a power unit developed by Audi. This announcement represents a significant milestone for Audi's F1 ambitions following its confirmation of entry earlier in the fall.

Audi will be responsible for developing the power unit at its Motorsport Competence Center in Neuburg, Germany. Sauber, based in Hinwil, Switzerland, will handle the design and manufacturing of the race car, as well as the planning and execution of race operations. The two entities have prior collaborative experience, including Audi's success in Le Mans and DTM racing.

The new Formula 1 regulations, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency, were a key factor in Audi's decision, according to the company. The 2026 power units will feature a significantly increased electric component and utilize synthetic, renewable fuels. Audi aims to have its power unit ready for testing in a Formula 1 car by 2025.
