Audi TT Marks 25 Years

Audi is marking the 25th anniversary of its TT sports car. The model, which debuted as a concept study in 1995 and entered series production in 1998, has become known for its clear design language and driving enjoyment.

The first-generation Audi TT Coupé was produced until 2006, with 178,765 units rolling off the assembly line. The design, created by a team under Freeman Thomas and Peter Schreyer, drew inspiration from Bauhaus principles, earning it descriptions like "a driving sculpture."

Production of the TT began at Audi Hungaria in Hungary, a facility also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The body shells were transported from Ingolstadt to Győr for final assembly, a cross-site collaboration unique in the automotive industry at the time. While the production version retained much of the concept's appeal, several details were adapted for series build.

The "TT" name is a nod to the Tourist Trophy motorcycle race on the Isle of Man and the NSU TT from the 1960s. The sports car has since evolved through three generations, maintaining its distinctive character and appeal among enthusiasts worldwide. In 1999, "Auto Europe" recognized it as the best new car of the year.
