Audi's Origins and Historical Development
Automaker Audi traces its roots to companies founded by engineer August Horch, which ultimately led to the creation of the iconic German car brand.
German automaker Audi's history begins in the late 19th century with engineer August Horch. His first company, A. Horch & Cie., was established in Cologne in 1899. Subsequent relocations to Reichenbach and then Zwickau in Saxony set the stage for the company's growth.
Due to disagreements, Horch left the company he founded and established a new automobile enterprise in 1909. As he could not use his own name, he translated it into Latin, resulting in "Audi," the Latin imperative of 'to hear'.
In 1932, Audi merged with other German manufacturers—DKW, Horch, and Wanderer—to form Auto Union AG. The four interlocking rings, symbolizing this union, remain Audi's globally recognized logo.
Audi's journey includes significant technological advancements, such as front-wheel drive and the introduction of the slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik" (Advancement through Technology) in the 1970s. The brand achieved notable motorsport success, particularly with the Audi quattro model in rally championships during the 1980s.
