August Breaks Global Heat Record, Driven by Climate Change and El Niño
August was the hottest month ever recorded globally, surpassing a critical climate threshold due to human-caused climate change and a strong El Niño, according to the European climate service Copernicus.

The planet experienced its hottest month on record in August, significantly exceeding a key climate threshold. The European climate service Copernicus reported that the extreme heat was driven by a combination of human-caused climate change and a powerful El Niño event.
The global average temperature for August reached 16.96 degrees Celsius (62.53 degrees Fahrenheit). This figure surpassed the previous record set in July 2023. The month's temperature was 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement. All eight of the hottest months recorded have occurred since July 2023.
Scientists emphasize that while El Niño contributes to temporary warming, the primary and long-term driver is human-induced climate change, largely from burning fossil fuels. El Niño is estimated to add only 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius to global temperatures, with the overwhelming majority of the warming attributed to greenhouse gas emissions.
The record heat in August also significantly impacted the United States, where the summer season was the hottest in recorded history. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated that this summer was hotter than during the peak of the "Dust Bowl" in the 1930s. Experts predict that extreme weather events, including heatwaves, storms, and floods, will become more frequent and severe in the future.
