Austrian Ski Resort Adds Rooftop Lookout to Enhance Mountain Views
Lech Mountain Mirror, a new rooftop installation at the Zugerbergbahn mountain station in Lech, Austria, provides a reflective surface to showcase the Alps. The project aims to extend the resort's appeal beyond winter sports.

The Austrian Alps are a significant draw for tourism, and the Lech ski resort has introduced a new feature to enhance the visitor experience.
The "Lech Mountain Mirror" is a landscape installation situated on the roof of the Zugerbergbahn mountain station. Designed by architecture firm Snøhetta, it features a shallow, rock-bottomed water basin intended to reflect the surrounding mountain scenery. This project was commissioned by Lech Bergbahnen AG, which operates the cable car, with the goal of extending the resort's operational season into the summer and attracting visitors year-round.
The design concept was inspired by Romantic-era landscape paintings, specifically aiming to create a natural-feeling element that complements rather than competes with the environment. The installation notably lacks railings, instead guiding visitors via a stone path to a viewing rock surrounded by the reflective water.
Snøhetta noted that the absence of railings presented significant technical and safety challenges during implementation. However, the completed project aims to offer visitors a unique, immersive experience that emphasizes the natural beauty of the Austrian Alps and encourages year-round visitation to the resort.
