Author of 'Future of Truth' Faces Scrutiny Over AI Use and Fabricated Quotes

Steve Rosenbaum, author of the recently released book The Future of Truth, is facing scrutiny following reports that his work contains fabricated or misattributed quotes. The New York Times revealed that the book included over half a dozen such instances. Rosenbaum acknowledged in a statement that a "handful" of quotes were "improperly attributed or synthetic," labeling them as unfortunate mistakes.

These revelations intensified after WIRED, which had published an excerpt of the book, faced questions regarding its generative AI editorial policy. AI detection tools indicated a high probability that the excerpt was AI-generated. Rosenbaum confirmed his use of AI tools during the book's research and editorial development, stating they assisted in "refining the presentation of ideas."

However, Rosenbaum asserted that the core ideas, reporting, arguments, and final authorship remain his own. He also advised caution regarding AI detection tools, noting their potential for false positives. Rosenbaum declined to provide specific details about the extent of AI use across the entire book when pressed by WIRED.

He described initially employing AI tools as search engines to gather information for research-intensive sections. WIRED's attempts to solicit further comment from Rosenbaum proved difficult, with him stating he did not want to "participate in that conversation." The book's publisher, BenBella Books, and its distributor, Simon & Schuster, did not respond to requests for comment.
