The Aftermarket Branch of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) has issued a statement to clarify recent media reports citing data on the "average age of new energy vehicles (NEVs)". The association clarified that the reported average age of 1.8 years pertains to the existing stock of NEVs and does not signify that owners replace their vehicles after only 1.8 years, nor does it represent the average lifespan of these vehicles.

The CAAM stated that "average age of vehicles in use" is distinct from "vehicle replacement cycle" and "average vehicle lifespan." The 1.8-year figure represents the average time since NEVs in the current fleet were sold new, akin to a person's average age, not their average lifespan. The association noted that replacement cycles and lifespan data are calculated differently and provided by other industry reports.

CAAM explained that conventional internal combustion engine passenger vehicles have an average age of approximately 8.2 years. The significantly lower average age for NEVs is a reflection of their shorter market history and the rapid increase in sales and new registrations in recent years. This statistic accurately represents the current phase of industry transformation.

The association apologized for any misinterpretations arising from the original report and urged media and stakeholders to clearly define statistical concepts when using and disseminating data. They emphasized the importance of objective use of figures to ensure the public receives accurate and complete information.
