Traditional applicant screening systems are proving inadequate for identifying talent in the artificial intelligence sector as AI-generated applications become more common. Businesses are increasingly compelled to look beyond local talent pools and adopt competency-based vetting to find genuinely skilled candidates.

Across the European Union, over 256,000 AI-related roles were added on LinkedIn between 2023 and 2026, indicating a growing demand that exacerbates existing talent shortages. This has pushed companies towards international and remote hiring, but AI-generated CVs make it harder to distinguish qualified individuals, with over 60% of job seekers reportedly using AI tools in their applications.

"There's already a general shortage of talent, but AI amplifies this," stated Felix Steffens, CEO of HR and employment management platform WorkMotion. "The talent available locally may lack the specific AI skills that are needed, reinforcing the necessity for companies to hire remotely."

Conventional systems like Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan CVs for keywords but fail to differentiate strong candidates from weak ones when AI tools make everyone appear qualified on paper. Constantin Michel, founder of recruitment platform Synmatch AI, argues that for AI roles, the focus should shift from listing skills to demonstrating the ability to build and execute technology. Tailored AI screening platforms that evaluate actual competencies are more effective than traditional methods.

New platforms such as Synmatch AI utilize AI for pre-screening applicants based on experience, salary expectations, and language proficiency, with AI interviews identifying best-fit candidates. Steffens highlights that strong AI talent can be found globally, not just in established tech hubs, citing examples in Southern Europe and Egypt. He urges employers to broaden their geographic search and assess candidates on their proven abilities, regardless of their location.
