Automated Vending Machines Replace NYC Subway Newsstands
Automated vending machines are being installed in New York City subway stations, offering convenience items and replacing underutilized newsstand locations with a more sustainable model.
CC Vending II, in partnership with the MTA and Coca-Cola, is deploying automated vending machines in New York City subway stations, aiming to revitalize former newsstand spaces. The joint venture has installed machines at three stations so far, with plans to expand to 60 locations across 23 additional stops within five years.
The large, Coca-Cola branded machines offer drinks, snacks, and protein shakes. Designed for commuters, the cashless system allows for purchases in under 10 seconds and operates 24/7, addressing needs outside traditional retail hours, particularly for late-night and overnight workers.
The project, initially proposed in 2019, faced delays due to the pandemic. The machines are specifically engineered for the subway environment, featuring robust, industrial-grade metal enclosures to withstand harsh conditions and deter vandalism. As of August 21, no vandalism incidents have been reported.
These vending machines are part of a broader MTA initiative to activate vacant retail spaces within the transit system. CC Vending is considering future expansions to include a wider range of products, such as electronics and health and beauty items, similar to offerings in airport vending machines.
