Autonomous electric bus pilot launches in Mainz

The German public transport operator Mainzer Mobilität has begun testing an autonomous electric minibus at the Winterhafen district in Mainz. The project, conducted in collaboration with R+V Versicherung and Mainzer Stadtwerke, aims to gather data on the viability of driverless technology within an urban public transport network.

This pilot program is part of the “Mainzer Mobilität 2030” development strategy. The researchers intend to analyze how passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians interact with autonomous vehicles, as well as the operational requirements for staff who supervise the vehicles. The goal is to determine if such transport solutions can efficiently serve peripheral urban areas where traditional bus routes may not be economically feasible.

During the four-week trial, the vehicle operates autonomously while being continuously monitored by trained staff. The outcomes of this study will inform further initiatives regarding the integration of autonomous systems into the local transport infrastructure.
