AV-TEST Advises Parents on Ensuring Children's Digital Safety

German cybersecurity firm AV-TEST has released expert advice for parents in conjunction with World Children's Day on September 20. The company emphasizes the importance of actively guiding and supporting children in the digital world, rather than leaving them to navigate it alone.

Erik Heyland, Head of Testing Labs at AV-TEST, highlights that parents often require assistance in managing their children's digital media consumption. While education and societal decisions are crucial, the company provides practical tips. Many children receive their first smartphone as early as ages 10–11 and begin using social media concurrently.

Studies indicate that YouTube is used by nearly all teenagers, with TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram following closely. A significant portion of young people spend 1–3 hours daily on these platforms, often exceeding parental estimates. The use of artificial intelligence among children remains limited but is noted in school assignments.

AV-TEST recommends several measures for parents to enhance children's digital safety. These include utilizing apps like YouTube Kids for content filtering, employing parental control apps such as Kaspersky Safe Kids or Kids360 to limit screen time and block dangerous contacts. Parents are also advised to investigate app privacy policies and use expert-tested mobile security applications.
