AV-TEST evaluates 13 smart home security kits

The AV-TEST Institute has evaluated 13 smart home security kits designed to protect against burglaries. The tested packages varied in price from 50 euros to over 400 euros.

The evaluation focused on the devices' ability to report intrusions, their overall IT security, and data protection. The results indicated that the most expensive products did not consistently offer the best security. Notably, the least expensive product tested successfully defended against numerous attack attempts, outperforming several pricier options.

In addition to basic intrusion alerts, many of the tested systems included features such as door and window sensors, motion detectors, and smoke detectors that can also function as alarm sirens. IP cameras were primarily used for surveillance.

AV-TEST reported that several more expensive systems exhibited significant deficiencies, particularly in sabotage protection, thereby offering only a "perceived sense of security." The test underscored the importance for consumers to prioritize actual IT security over brand name or price when selecting such devices.
