AV-TEST Evaluates Secure Web Gateway and DNS-Layer Security Efficacy
A new comparative study by AV-TEST assesses the effectiveness of web security products in blocking malware and phishing attempts. The evaluation was commissioned by Cisco Inc.

The independent testing lab AV-TEST has released a new comparative study evaluating the efficacy of various secure web gateway and DNS-layer security solutions. The research, commissioned by Cisco Inc., assessed the products' capabilities in protecting against malware and phishing.
The test focused on how effectively corporate security solutions safeguard remote and roaming workers, a critical concern given the shift towards cloud-delivered security models. Products were configured to maximize protection for mobile agents. A separate evaluation specifically examined DNS-layer protection features.
The study scrutinized the detection rates for links leading to executable malware, other malicious file types, and phishing URLs. A total of 3,572 active malicious samples were used. To ensure accuracy, the evaluation also assessed false positive rates, utilizing 2,165 clean websites and downloads.
AV-TEST noted that secure web gateways offer more granular inspection than DNS-layer protection, as they analyze all web connections and files comprehensively. The report provides businesses with insights into the performance of security solutions in today's evolving digital landscape.
