AV-TEST Team Climbs Magdeburg Cathedral's North Tower

IT security institute AV-TEST GmbH was among the first companies granted access to climb the north tower of Magdeburg Cathedral as part of its restoration efforts. This opportunity was extended to sponsors who had contributed to the refurbishment of the tower's 430 steps.

In June 2013, prior to the tower's official public opening, 30 AV-TEST employees ascended the 430 steps. The climb, taking approximately 15 minutes, offered panoramic views of Magdeburg and the Elbe River. During the ascent, the team also learned about the tower's 8800 kg bell.

Site manager Mr Sussmann provided insights during the tour. He noted that tower ascents were infrequent even for him, occurring only up to three times daily. The tour also touched upon the historical construction of spiral staircases, typically built clockwise in medieval times to hinder attackers wielding swords in their right hands.
