AWS Billing Glitch Temporarily Shows Customers Billions in Fees
Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a billing system error that led some customers to believe they owed billions of dollars in usage fees. The company is working to resolve the issue over the weekend.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported a significant billing system error on Friday, which temporarily displayed astronomically high figures for service fees to some customers.
Customers were reportedly receiving alerts indicating usage fees in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Bill Radjewski, who operates CollegeFootballData.com, stated he received a notification showing over $1.5 billion in usage fees, with his August bill projected to exceed $3 billion. "I’ve had this account for 6+ years and in that time my monthly spend has never exceeded $0.02," Radjewski shared.
Similar reports emerged on social media platforms like X, with users citing incorrect billing estimates ranging from $22 billion to $110 billion. One user expressed shock over a supposed $5 million charge. AWS confirmed the issue was global and affected "estimated billing data within the billing console."
According to AWS, the root cause was "an issue with unit pricing within the estimated billing computation subsystem." The company initiated corrective actions, including rolling back a recent change and pausing estimated billing computations. AWS stated the problem is expected to be resolved by the weekend and that no customer action is required.
The error did not affect actual charges but caused temporary confusion and concern among users of the cloud service, highlighting the importance of accurate billing systems in complex cloud infrastructure.
