AWS Implements Compliance Strategy for NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has detailed a strategy designed to streamline compliance and reporting for the NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 security standard. The approach leverages a suite of AWS tools to help organizations automate and monitor their adherence to federal security guidelines.

The strategy focuses on implementing preventative and proactive controls to block the deployment of noncompliant resources. Additionally, detective and responsive controls are designed to immediately notify stakeholders of misconfigurations and automate remediation, thereby reducing the time to resolution.

Key tools highlighted include AWS Security Hub and Prowler for detection, Service Control Policies (SCPs) and AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) for preventative measures, and AWS CloudFormation Guard (Guard) and CDK-Nag for proactive checks. Automated Security Response on AWS (ASR) is also integrated for responsive actions.

For reporting purposes, AWS offers Read-Only Roles for Compliance Teams and the Security Hub Compliance Analyzer (SCHA) tool. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance continuous compliance and simplify reporting for organizations subject to NIST standards.
