AWS IoT Core Introduces Device Location Feature for Asset Tracking

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced AWS IoT Core Device Location, a new managed feature within AWS IoT Core designed to support asset tracking solutions. This new capability allows customers to determine device locations without the need for GPS hardware, addressing limitations such as high power consumption and integration costs.

Historically, GPS has been the predominant method for locating IoT devices. However, its power demands and device footprint have prompted the exploration of alternatives. The AWS IoT Core Device Location feature supports technologies like Wi-Fi positioning, cellular triangulation, and cloud-assisted GNSS. These methods typically require further processing to translate raw data into usable geographic coordinates.

The new feature integrates with solutions from AWS Partners, including Semtech, HERE, and MaxMind. These partners' technologies enable the conversion of data from various localization techniques into a standard format for geographic coordinates. This output can then be used with mapping services for visualization and tracking purposes.

Businesses can utilize AWS IoT Core Device Location to optimize operational processes, simplify maintenance, and unlock new use cases across sectors such as retail, agriculture, and transportation. The feature works in conjunction with the AWS IoT Core Rules Engine, which received an update in October 2022.
