AWS Updates EC2 Instance Lineup with New Hardware Options
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a series of updates to its EC2 instance offerings, including enhancements to T2, R4, F1, Elastic GPUs, I3, and C5 instance types. The changes aim to improve performance and introduce new hardware acceleration capabilities.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has rolled out significant updates to its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance portfolio. The announcements cover several key instance types, including T2, R4, F1, Elastic GPUs, I3, and C5, bringing performance enhancements and expanding hardware acceleration options.
The newly introduced F1 instances provide access to Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), which AWS states can accelerate workloads like genomics, seismic analysis, financial risk analysis, and big data search by up to 30 times. The F1 instances are available in a developer preview, and users can develop and sell FPGA-powered applications and services through the AWS Marketplace.
Further updates include the R4 instances, designed for memory-intensive applications such as business intelligence, in-memory caching, and databases. These instances offer substantially more memory than their predecessors, the R3 instances, while also improving cache efficiency. AWS continues to enhance its high I/O and compute-optimized instances and support for advanced instructions like AVX-512 for machine learning tasks.
These updates are informed by customer feedback, with AWS engaging users to understand their challenges and future workload requirements. The new instance types address demands in areas such as in-memory analytics, multimedia processing, and large-scale, storage-intensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications.
