Axel Springer Marks 80 Years as a Media Company
The media group Axel Springer, founded in 1946, is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The company has evolved from a local publisher into an international digital enterprise.

Axel Springer SE, the German media conglomerate, is marking its 80th anniversary this year. Founded in 1946, the company has significantly transformed from a local publisher into an international media enterprise with headquarters in Berlin and New York, employing over 10,000 people in more than 25 countries.
The company's early publications included titles like "Nordwestdeutsche Hefte" and the successful program guide Hör Zu, which quickly achieved a circulation of one million copies. Hamburger Abendblatt and Bild followed. Axel Springer reportedly focused early on technical innovations, such as color printing and early forms of digital storage.
Over the years, the company underwent several changes following its stock market flotation in 1985. Current CEO Mathias Döpfner took charge in 2002, initiating a strong focus on digitalization. The aim was to further expand the digital presence through investments in digital companies.
The company's international expansion began in 1986 with the licensing of Auto Bild and continued with growth across Europe and the United States. In 2020, Axel Springer went private, and it is expected to transition back to family control by 2025, with Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner holding significant stakes.
