Antonia Ax:son Johnson founded Axfoundation in 1993 to promote scientific research and practical application of sustainable development. The initiative stemmed from her early conviction, upon taking over the family business in 1982, that corporations hold significant potential for societal change.
The foundation was established in response to growing environmental concerns and the need to integrate sustainability into business practices. Initially, Axfoundation focused on raising awareness and facilitated dialogues by inviting speakers with diverse viewpoints, including critics of the Axel Johnson Group.
During the economic challenges of the 1990s, sustainability issues were deprioritized within the Axel Johnson Group. To ensure continuity, Johnson established the foundation. Today, Axfoundation operates as a "do tank," focusing on results-oriented processes to challenge conventional thinking and convert ideas into practical solutions for global issues.
Axfoundation emphasizes the importance of a long-term perspective and aims to be at the forefront of identifying and addressing new challenges. Its work involves continuously evaluating and reforming sustainability commitments made by companies and individuals.
