Axfoundation Supports Alternative Materials and Food Technology Research

Axfoundation is actively supporting the development of alternative materials and food technologies in Sweden, with a focus on reducing waste and environmental impact. Recent initiatives highlight the effective utilization of raw materials like wool and broccoli, alongside the creation of more sustainable food production alternatives.

In June 2026, Axfoundation showcased future materials crafted from mycelium, fish leather, oyster shells, reeds, and Swedish wool at the Nationalmuseum during Stockholm Fashion Week. This presentation underscored the potential of these biomaterials and by-products to serve as sustainable solutions within the fashion and design sectors.

Simultaneously, the foundation is investing in food technology to enhance nutrient absorption and minimize food waste. One project involves a technology that boosts iron absorption from whole grains, now scaled into a new snack product to address iron deficiency among girls and young women. Research presented in March 2026 also explored utilizing mycoprotein as a feed for hens instead of soy, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of egg production, where feed represents up to 80% of the climate impact.

Further initiatives include introducing Swedish-grown hemp seed into a reimagined version of the classic semla pastry and a collaboration with IKEA to utilize broccoli leaves, addressing the issue that half of Sweden's broccoli crop is currently left in the field. A report also revealed that approximately 2,400 tons of wool are wasted annually in the Nordics, highlighting the need for novel industrial applications for this underutilized resource. Axfoundation's work spans diverse sectors, promoting innovations that leverage local resources for a more circular economy.
