Axians Develops Digital Twin and Mixed Reality Applications

Axians Germany has implemented digital twin solutions and mixed reality technologies to enhance industrial processes and retail customer experiences.

Through digital twins, the company's field technicians can repair machinery faster using the Microsoft HoloLens device. The technology provides a virtual 3D model of a physical machine, enabling technicians to identify faulty parts and the necessary tools. The VR-enabled headset allows technicians to navigate to the machine requiring service and receive real-time status updates.

Creating a digital twin involves precise 3D scanning of an environment and its machinery, integrating it with existing data such as IoT feeds, ticketing systems, and facility information. These digital replicas offer access to supplementary data, fostering the development of customized business cases in collaboration with clients.

The technology merges mixed reality, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data. Unlike augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR), mixed reality integrates virtual 3D elements into the real environment, allowing them to be viewed from all angles. This approach has been reported to improve the 'first-time fix rate' for repairs.

In the retail sector, digital twins can facilitate virtual tours of stores, where customers can explore products in 3D and access additional information. The technology can also guide customers to specific product locations or integrate with online shopping platforms.
