IT service provider Axians has analyzed the Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) model, which is seen by many experts as a significant change in cloud security. According to Gartner, SASE is set to replace traditional, data center-centric network designs. The network's focal point has shifted to edge computing, driven by digitalization and the rise of remote work.
SASE integrates networking and network security functions into a unified, cloud-delivered service model. Instead of relying on a physical network perimeter, SASE utilizes a dynamic, cloud-based approach. The core idea is to provide secure access to applications, data, and services for users and devices, regardless of their location or the device used, with a strong emphasis on identity and context.
The model combines Wide Area Network (WAN) capabilities with various security services, including Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Secure Web Gateway, firewall functionalities, and Zero Trust Network Access. Axians suggests that SASE is suitable for companies experiencing increased cloud adoption and those looking to reduce costs and complexity by consolidating security platforms.
SASE services are delivered from the cloud. Access decisions are made in real-time based on user or device identity, context, and company security policies. This includes securing cloud applications via CASB, which monitors and controls traffic to cloud services. Gartner predicts the SASE model will become established in the cybersecurity market within the next five to ten years.
