Axios CEO: AI is increasing complexity, not simplifying work
Axios CEO Jim VandeHei argues that artificial intelligence is not yet simplifying work, but rather increasing options and decisions. He proposes a system to manage the information overload.

Axios CEO Jim VandeHei posits that artificial intelligence is currently not simplifying work but is instead increasing complexity. VandeHei contends that AI generates more options, decisions, and noise, necessitating new approaches to information management.
He proposes a system called "Confront, Delete, Amplify" as a solution. VandeHei shares his experiences applying this system at Axios, including an internal meeting with the subject line "Let's Kill S***." In an era of rapid change driven by AI, traditional planning horizons are insufficient, according to VandeHei.
"A six-month planning horizon is pure fantasy," VandeHei stated in an interview. He cited changes in the media landscape, where traffic to Axios properties via Google Search has collapsed in just a few months, impacting millions of users. Additionally, the volume of AI-driven bot attacks against websites has significantly increased.
VandeHei suggests that AI is currently a machine for creating complexity rather than simplicity. With AI assistance, individuals can produce proficient writing or conduct research rapidly, leading to an influx of information and ideas. This demands more rigorous consideration and the ability to delete the superfluous to focus on the essential.
