Oakland, California-based Beneficial State Bank, a certified B Corporation, is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance its goals of social justice and climate accountability. The bank, which distinguishes itself by not funding fossil fuels or private prisons, hopes to leverage AI to enhance the efficiency and inclusivity of its lending practices.

However, the adoption of AI necessitates careful ethical consideration. "It has been somewhat challenging to put AI in the 'unethical' category," stated Terra Neilson, the bank's Chief Impact Officer. Nevertheless, the bank recently extended a pilot program utilizing Stratyfy's AI-assisted credit decisioning tool, aiming to reduce systemic bias in underwriting.

BetterFi, a community development financial institution participating in the pilot, has already reported that the AI tool increased loan approvals within BIPOC communities by 21 percent. Neilson suggests that if the banking sector can use AI to identify and correct its blind spots, it could help mitigate historical redlining and bias that have long hindered marginalized groups' access to capital.

B Lab, the organization behind the B Corp certification, recently updated its standards to address AI use. "AI utilization is effectively a stakeholder governance question," said Clay Brown, Chief Standards Officer at B Lab. B Corp companies are expected to scrutinize the environmental impact and ethical considerations of AI tools and the data centers that power them.

Researchers point to a lack of transparency regarding data center environmental footprints, creating a dilemma for B Corps who must weigh AI's benefits against its potential, yet often unknown, environmental costs. The decision on whether to adopt AI tools or refrain from them to maintain competitiveness presents a key challenge.
