A new global survey involving nearly 10,000 Back Market customers across five countries examines consumer attitudes towards phone usage and its environmental impact. The study indicates widespread concern about climate change, yet varying levels of understanding regarding technology's role and personal actions.

The majority of respondents expressed concern for climate change, with figures reaching 90% in France, 86% in Germany, 84% in Spain, 85% in the UK, and 80% in the US. The manufacturing stage was identified as the most environmentally damaging aspect of a device's lifecycle in Germany (59%) and France (51%), while only 33% in the US recognized this.

Most consumers report using their smartphones for over three years before replacement, led by France (87%), Spain (86%), and the UK (85%). However, this longevity is not always driven by pro-environmental choices; up to 56% in Spain cited device failure as the reason for replacement. Back Market notes that a significant portion of returned devices are technically functional but discarded due to cosmetic issues or software incompatibility.

The survey also highlights the potential for repair. While a willingness to repair exists, practical implementation can be challenging. By raising awareness about the positive environmental benefits of extended device life and refurbishment, Back Market aims to encourage more sustainable consumption within the tech sector.
