Bad Frankenhausen's Leaning Tower Reopens After Renovation

The iconic Leaning Tower of Bad Frankenhausen in northern Thuringia is once again accessible to visitors after comprehensive restoration efforts spanning several years. A new, modern visitor center has opened concurrently with the tower, aiming to draw tourists to the region.

The tower, which had been closed for decades due to concerns about its stability, underwent a significant stabilization project. Metal support structures were installed to secure the tower in its current tilted state. The underlying issue of saline groundwater, which continues to erode the soil, was not addressed, as it remains relevant for the area's spa tourism.

The visitor center will showcase the tower's history and its connection to the local salt deposits, which have brought prosperity but also posed risks to the structure. The facilities will include exhibitions, a cinema, and plans for a future "Skywalk"—a glass walkway offering unique, oblique views of the town.

Mayor Matthias Strejc described the reopening as a "miracle," highlighting the tower's personal significance and the region's goal to revitalize tourism through this unique landmark.
